Prognosis Negative

Rather than do my 5k trial run on the hard surface of the bike path up I drove up to UQ. I wanted a soft surface, and the gravel track seemed perfect.

From about 500 meters onwards the right ITB and glute hurt. I played with the pace to see if it made a difference. It didn't.

I ran to the end of the gravel track then crossed over and did a couple of laps of the cricket oval before heading back to my starting point. I was in pain all the way, though I don't believe it got worse. Well, not much worse anyway.

With Canberra just over two weeks away all I could think was could I put up with the pain for another 3 plus hours.

Bugger :-(

Not looking real good, matey! How intensive has the physio regime been of late? Just try to stay positive and open minded and accept that what will be will be. I've got everything crossed for you.

Oh no Tess - it doesn't sound very good. Fingers crossed - you've done the work, maybe just take it easy. Bugger, bugger, bugger!

Still over two weeks to go. All is not lost yet.

But even if all doesn't go well, there are plenty more races over the years to come. See the big picture.

Keep your chin up Tess. What Plu said makes a lot of sense.

Enforced taper. Not much running will still see you through a good time at Canberra. Hope it gets better.

be good Tesso and dont push it, doing one slow race (you could always swap to the 10km?) right at the start of the season is better than being out for months... trust me :)

Its taper time anyway mate - just take it easy for a few days and be patient (says Mr Impatient!). Fingers crossed for you matey! Alternatively you run behind "stinky man" - that sounds like it would take your mind of any pain!

Canberra was only ever a training run for you anyhow buddy! Your big focus is PMC and we have to think of that. Plus I need you there at Warwick to chase. Know how you like your points!!!

So. Rest up girlfriend. Tell the physio to make you cry. Consider the cortisone. Consider the 10km at Canberra (1st loop of the marathon as opposed to the race the day before....)

And between now and then....NOTHING!!! WEll nothing but R.I.C.E. and drugs!

Don't be greedy - you've done about a million marathons anyway :-)

Still a couple of weeks to go - never say never - Tuesday before Six Foot I gave myself very little chance, by Thursday I gave myself almost no chance, by Friday I thought it was 50/50 and on Saturday I ran. Its a funny old thing the ITB - whimsical as all get out (it must be girl muscle).

Seriously mate - I am mustering every positive vibe I can find and I'm directing em up your way ;-)

Not good Tess,

I will be running the 10km the day before easy, would love the company if you're not doing the full?

That's not good Tesso. :-(

Think about cortisone - it's done wonders for Norma.

I hope you make it.

Tess... you will know what to do! Take it easy for the next week... if in pain don't run. I know how you are feeling so a big hug from me! Take care and whatever you decide we will all be there for you!!

As hard as it is to say, it is one race on the calender. You dont want to battle through it and do more damage, this will only prolong your recovery and jeopardise entering future races.

It will still be a great weekend for you (im assuming you will still go), watching your best running buddy do her first Marathon and catching up with all the CR's.

However there still is time and as everyone has said, rest up and let the physio do his thing. All the best I hope it all works out for you.

Sorry Tess to read belatedly about your terrible run of luck. The running gods have to smile on you soon.

Good luck Tesso. I really hope you are able to run in Canberra but if not there are other times. Just rest and recuperate and I too will keep everything crossed for you!

Thinking of you Tesso, lots has already been said but keep at it, 2 weeks is a long time and hopefully you can turn it round enough to run like 2p did.

All the very best Tess - what is it with these tapering injuries anyway? Hope it all simply settles down in the fortnight to go, and that the treatment works for you.

Oh my poor Tess! But don't say no until the very last minute. As Ewen said, cortisone has done wonders for me, but there's no guarantee it's going to work for everyone. However, 2 weeks out is the ideal time to have it & then do nothing until race day. Even without an injection, you should do absolutely nothing but rest...hate it or not!!

Tess, you are hard as nails, so no doubt you will come through this. Don’t force a race that will have you on the side lines for longer than necessary (a case of do as I say not as I do I’m afraid), keep the physio and sprits up, and in a months time when you’re back at it, you won’t look back. Good luck!
