3k TT

It was the monthly 3k TT at Pat's this morning. Going my rep times from last week I set myself a goal of going sub 12:30. Its quite a way off my PB of 11:53 set in February but I didn't want to be too ambitious.

After our strides we were off. At around the 400 meter mark Clairie cruised by and I thought it was strange she didn't do her usual flying start. But she sure looked comfy and everytime we passed she looked to be moving well. A peek at her blog and you'll see just how well!

Anyway, I hit 1k in 4:01 feeling okay. The second km always seems the hardest so I just focussed again on hanging just behind the girls I had been chasing. The time at 2k was 8:15 I think, so not a good second km. I knew I had to really push to get under that 12:30 mark. Put on a sprint about 100m from the finish and crossed in 12:28.

Goal achieved. So I should be pleased I guess. But I'm not. Its my slowest TTk since June 2004. Talk about a lot of work to be done :-(

But that's not the main reason I'm not happy. In hindsight I reckon I set the bar too low. To be honest I could've done just a little faster today, I know I could've pushed myself more than I did. Not a lot harder, but harder no less. And I certainly could have started the sprint for home at least 100 meters sooner. Its not the time I ran that I'm not happy about, but how I ran.

So spent the next hour or two beating myself up. Then went and had a massage and got beaten up a bit more.

Tesso, I understand what you mean. It also comes down to the old dilemma of whether to start hard and hold on or to start conservatively and negative split. Sometimes I think if you start hard you surprise yourself at how much you hang on. And if you start conservatively, you sometimes never pick up that time lost at the beginning.

Good to hear (in comment on my blog) that you have dusted off the heart rate monitor. This is absolutely the right time of year (in Brisbane) to use it to good effect. If you want any tips or a quick outline of how to start using it effectively, please email me. stlacey at gmail dot com. What make and model is it?

Dont beat yourself up, you have put in some huge PB's this year (isnt it one for every distance) and not every run can be a PB. Plus aren't you doing the 25km relay this weekend. You're coming back from an injury, you ran a half about a fortnight ago and probably do more distance weekly that a lot of us combined!! :)

I know what you mean about setting the bar to low though - I did a 3km effort by myself this morning and was disappointed, but probably because I 'let' myself take it easy. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow ;)

I was about to jump in with a comment just before I read your second last paragraph - I 100% agree with you, and think that you just ran to your expectations today. It's a common thing to do (lord knows I do it all the b***y time), and clearly you were capable of more than that today, if pyschologically you had prepared yourself for it.

So, is there a goal left before the end of the year?

I think I am going to have to report you for assault you beat yourself up so much Tesso.

Dr 2P prescribes you trial a mantra I used to use waaay back in ma sprinting days (ahh those were the days)... but I digress.

Relax and go faster

Not just when your running, but in life too :-)

Miners asked about a goal before the end of the year.

Kurrawa to Pt Danger on Sunday. 25k. I want to get close to 2 hours (did 2 hrs and 11 seconds last year).

But the real goal is to finish knowing I gave it 100%, no less.

Tess I too had a goal for Kurrawa to do as close to 2hrs as possible. However I love your ambition - to finish knowing you put in 100%. That should be our mantra.

Well done today on your efforts and personally, i think if you hadn't been cheering for all the others around you, you would have been able to focus on your race.
But that doesn't sound as much fun does it??

Your a hard task master tess :-) But I agree, I always feel a bit empty if I feel I have not put on 100%. If you have a bad day ou deal with it, but if you feel you took it easy... a bit blah. I hope your massage was good... I ams till trying to line one up :(

Calire is right... sounds like a lot of cheering... I am impressed you can run that fast and yell out to people.. haha

You've been doing some long distances at a good pace, so I understand the easy shorter distance goal.

Making running goals is more art than science...(Havng read the prosecution brief, I'm building the case for the defence here)..., and being a few seconds away from optimal speed, and this is not admitted being purely hypothetical, this is in any event no hanging offence your Honour.

The defendant has suffered the ignominy and embarrassment of being outed on CR blogsville, penalty enough. Therefore we say the appropriate course of rehabilitation is one month's hard labour until the next TT.

Well done to make the goal, even if you cruised it a little it is a good time regardless. Use it as a confidence builder for the real game on Sunday, 2 hours!!

Are runners ever completely happy w/their performances. "I hit my goal BUT....." is a familiar phrase!

Tess, stop beating yourself up. We all know you are better than a 12:30. But that's the goal you set and considering where you are at the moment coming back from injury, it was a good solid effort. Now you can use that as motivation to break 2 hours on Sunday. I hope it goes well for you.

Hey Tesso there's always next time. All you nned to do is to do is give the wonderful encouragement to yourself that you so readily give to others. You of all people deserve it.

I'm sure you will soon be back to your top form. I know what you mean about beating yourself up when you don't think you did 100% but you set a goal and did it. Focus on that for now and then you can set yourself a tougher goal next month.
