Where's Wally

It was a nice easy 10k this morn with Clairie and Lizzle, we averaged just under 5:30 pace. The perfect session as all of us are doing Caboolture on Saturday night. Not to mention we were running slow enough to squeeze in just a bit of a chat. We finished with the now standard 20 push-ups.

I wore my HRM for the first time in yonks but have no idea what the reading meant - I averaged 130 bpms. I might do a bit of research to see what heart rate I should be running at for the 6 hours ... unless of course somebody out there already knows :-)

I said yesterday there must've been around 100 runners at PCRG. In fact there were 102 - a record crowd!

On the hill yesterday

Just some of the record 102 runners

Still not getting your updates and yet I deleted you and then resubscribed. Guess I will just have to visit the site each day to check :(

I estimate your max to be 172 so a HR of 130 would be around 75% of Maximum HR. That is a good training HR I think. I have no idea ha ha

Actually I think your HR was a bit high for how slow we were running but that would be because of how bloody humid it was out there this morning - totally stinking I found it. I was very dehydrated afterwards. I got home and felt a bit crook for 30mins.....maybe that was the anger at breaking my key in the ignition though!!!

Great running/gasbagging with you this am. Cheers, clairie.

As far as what that heart rate at that pace means. It means your bloody fit. Well as fit as I am right now but still not as fit as our mate Mr. Lacey.

I saw those photos on Pat homepage today too. Terrific shots.

To really make any sense of the HR you need to know your Max HR. Using the 220 - age estimate for maxHR is a very poor guide. eg Mine would be 168 but in reality it is 186. That can make a big difference.

I would expect an easy run like that should be in the 70 - 75% MaxHR zone.

Wally? Standing on Pat's left holding the red drink bottle?

Yes, depends on your maximum. I like Robert's idea - no higher than 75%. For me, that's about 6:10/km but there's no way I could keep that going for 6 hours.

are we supposed to say "there's no wally's there, only nice folks"

agree with Graham that unless you know the max, it makes it a bit hard. my max is actually lower than most, so i puff at about 135-140, thus probably over 75%.

the conversation test is pretty much sport on...sounds like you did plenty of that so all's well :-)

I'm also not getting your feed. I couldn't believe it had been so long since you posted so clicked through to your blog. There are several feeds, so I'll try one of the others.

I think it's hard to talk about an appropriate heart rate for such a long race. Since you haven't been training with a HRM, I'm not sure that now is the time to try and apply it in a race, especially an ultra where aerobic endurance and stamina are probably less a factor than biomechanical fitness and energy supply. You probably have to just go by feel to find that level of effort you think you can maintain. Actually, even though I make extensive use of teh HRM in my training (in case you hadn't noticed), I plan to not wear it in my upcoming marathon because under racing conditions I think it is more important to go by pace and how I feel.

FWIW.

Now that's a really serious runner's look - obviously you must've been running too fast! (tho' at least you don't get your feet confused and fall over in the process like some people....)

For my easy runs I find I average about 140bpm - don't know whether that's good or bad?
