Its All Good
Well, its not really. But that's what they say on Big Brother and shows like that when they get kicked out and lose their chance of winning big bucks.
This morning was my first run in three weeks and two days, not that I've been counting. I was pretty excited about the prospect and so was up about an hour before heading down the bikeway at 6.15am.
The first km there was a definite niggle in my knee, but after that it all but disappeared and the second km I felt good. Soon after however my knee started hurting again, and within seconds it was more than just a niggle. It was pain. The worse thing was the pain wasn't just my ITB but my entire knee. I stopped to do some stretches - I couldn't even bend my leg enough to do a standing quad stretch.
After a while the pain subsided so I tried a run/walk thing home. The first run was 3 minutes before the pain kicked in and from then on the run bits got shorter and shorter. In the end I wasn't even able to manage a minute before I was forced to walk. A few hundred meters from home I recalled what Tuggeranong Don had mentioned about changing his gait by opening his stance and gave that a go, it seemed to help for a while but the pain soon came back.
I was so depressed when I got home I downloaded about 10 Leonard Cohen songs.
The 12 step plan obviously wasn't enough. I need to up the anti. Next stop is a sports doctor on Thursday morning.

Hang in there Tesso. Looks like it will be one step forward, one step back for now. Things might seem bad but they are probably not as bad as they seem. It will be interesting to see what the sports doctor has to say. I know you will win over this thing.
Oh Tesso. Leonard Cohen songs? Shesh, that is depressed ;-)
Hang in there Tesso. You will overcome this & come back stronger. I know it. Good thoughts coming your knee's way right now!
Dang - I am sorry Tesso. I totally understand the frustration you are going through.
Chin up Tess, its majorly frustrating I know, but you will be able to come through this and be stronger for it. I have one of those thick rubber band things for resistance work if you wanted to use it, I found this was pretty good (and hard!) for strengthing leg and glute muscles.
That sounds very painful and very depressing. Sorry to hear your first run didn't go according to plan. Hope the sports doc can come up with a solution.
I started with a BIG smile when I read, "This morning was my first run in three weeks and two days, not that I've been counting." The first thing I thought was & how many minutes.
But then I continued on and read with dismay that the body is not supporting your passion. I hope it all comes together very soon for you and you can get back out there running without any pain!
Stu
Well at least you look like you are taking it better than Toby did on Dancing With The Stars last night - I thought he was going to throw the teddy out of the cot for a minute! He sucked it up in the end though ;-)
Hard not to seem patronising or cliche at times like this - but FWIW - mate I really feel for ya.
Hope you get the answers you need from the quack to get on top of this thing.
I got excited seeing the title, then......well you know the rest. That is a shame Tesso, im feeling for you.
You probably needed to download Leonard before your run. Im sure listening to him would make your ears hurt so much that you wouldn't even notice your knee :)
Seriously, I hope you get some positive answers on thursday. Take care.
That's bad news. Best of luck with the Doc.
(I love Leonard Cohen and I don't find him depressing at all.)
:-( Maybe they can do the deep tissue release - either with acupuncture needles, or injecting saline or even cortisone? Good luck with it Tesso.
Just keep in mind that even if the prognosis is bad, you can always do a short-term triathlon career trial. I did that, and when I came back to running, I was stronger than ever. (Okay, not your standard, but doing okay!)
Oh, to Tesso's fans: No one need worry about Tesso's emotional well-being just yet - she's been downloading Leonard Cohan, but at least it wasn't Missy Higgins...
Whose Leonard Cohen??? I that something I need to know. Not the news I wanted to hear after takling to you on the weekend and your aim of being at Warwick. Hope the Doc gives you some answers that have definite solutions not just a sit and wait fix.
I have nothing to offer that hasn't been said. Just that the Cirque family's thoughts are with you. Good luck with the Dr.
So sorry to hear about your situation Tess. I know exactly what you are going through as Belinda does not know when she will be able to run again. I hope the doc has some answers for you. Core strengthening exercises get a bit boring after a while.
it just doesn't seem fair
i was so happy saturday and now feel let down but i'm sure it's ten times worse for you
you have my permission to pig out on chocolate or ice-cream
Not good again Tesso. What the doctor says will be interesting. Surely it can't be a simple tight ITB.
Whatever it is, I hope it's not serious and you're back running soon. :)
Tesso, I forgot to mention that Pilates is definitely worth it. If you can't do a class, get a teacher to give you a couple of one-on-one lessons. Maintaining 'neutral spine' throughout the exercises is important, as is body awareness.
I'm crying! I thought like Stu Mac said the start of the post was so good and then despair. Hope you can sort out soon what might be the problem and get back on the road again. I'm worried about Johnny Dark knowing the words to Leonard Cohen.
Poor Tesso. I was thinking today that you are the only woman I know who can run over 100km in a day. I know you can get back there. You are an inspiration to me.
I think a good bottle of red is in order, my lovely. *hugs* I was all excited there for a minute with the title, too.
Fingers crossed for good news from the sports doctor!
Not the best of news but you'll be back Tess. All the best.
