On A Roll
Well, so far I've stuck to my plan. I'm sure its working. The ITB roller doesn't seem to hurt quite as much, then again, it couldn't have been any worse than when I first started using it.
Being injured is so time consuming, but on the bright side I've caught up with most of my backlog of TV viewing (about to start round 2 for today while watching Monday night's episode of "Shameless") and have been listening to lots of music.
And I thought of the twelfth step ...
12. Daily self massage
Adam yesterday suggested I use my knuckles to massage my quads (using lots of body lotion). And putting a tennis ball or golf ball under my hammies while sitting on a hardish chair. Whew, I don't have to give up the red wine :-)

Hey, you know what I found really good rather than a golf ball, was one of those back massager things... the ones that have a handle and four plastic balls on them, about 3bucks from Woolies type thing.
I found it worked the same as a golf ball plus it had the added bonus of being able to fit all around (and then moving it up and down the muscle a la physio palm style) my leg for a real good stretching session :)
But chelle, golf balls are cheap - just go to any park!
Keep at it Tesso and once again you'll soon be hanging out with people who are runners.
Is the ITB really getting better or were you doing your massage after a few of those reds :)
Self massage is a great way to speed up the process, although I can never bring myself to make it hurt as much as those sadistic physio's.
Tennis balls, massage oil and wine, no there's a recipe, just add a wobble board and your laughing.
Hahah.... that is one 12step plan!
"Hi, my mname is tesso and I have a angry ITB".... it is certaibky a club a lot of us have been involved with and do not want to rejoin! Keep all that hard work and you will be a stronger runner!!!
Maybe with that spare time and those 12 steps you could start ITB's anonymous!
Can't say enough about the knuckles, that and yoga saw me recover well last year, use voltarin with it or your knuckles will get funny from the friction.
Ouch Tesso! You'd need the red wine for that one.
Pour some cab sav on it too.
Being injured opens up a whole new world of non-runners and sleep. Enjoy them while you can.
I am glad I have the stress fracture. Not really! But sitting on a golf ball just sounds like too much hard work. If you have to give up anything, give up water never red wine!
Hey Tess, sooo many things to do when you have a stressed ITB. OK, I need to know - when I run I get a single localised pain in the side of the thigh. Like a single entry gunshot wound. Is that what you have or do get pain down the whole length of the ITB ?
Lots of pain by the sounds of it - and it all sounds very familiar too! But as long as it gets you back on your feet and running again, its all good. I have been tossing around the idea of doing Gold Coast marathon.....maybe!
Right .... self massage! I've never found that it hurts. I might be doing it differently though.
This may show my complete ignorance but curousity has finally gotten the better of me and I have Googled ITB.
What a painful and frustrating sounding condition.
I hope you get better soon.
Dont forget to do your 'good' side as well. And yes, there ARE some benefits in being injured ;-)
Phew! Thank god about the red wine! I think a daily massage should go in the non injury list as well :)
A golf ball sounds painful, Tess! But if it works.....you'll very soon be back out there; stay with it!
After your last week's NRL tipping result it is obvious you are spending a lot of time watching the games on TV and following the form closely!
hey tesso - sounds like everything is going well! it is a rare scenario indeed where daily massage is considered to be a bad thing! keep up the good work!
E
Good to see that the wine is being enjoyed!
If nothing else, it will take the emphasis off the fact you are torturing yourself with a golf ball...although better than a club i would suspect :P
hope its feeling better :)
Just love your attitude towards this injury Tesso. You will have it licked sooner than you think. I had bad ITB once and came back a faster and stronger runner. Also great to see another runner who likes their wine and chocolate fix per day.
Are you still alive Tesso?
