Man Of The Match ....

... that's what Helen was calling us after Pat published his April TT report :-) Pretty cool, eh!

Since then the training has gone like this -

Wed 2/4 - 7.5k easyish

Thu 3/4 - rest

Fri 4/4 - PCRG. 2 x 4mins, 2 x 1mins, 2 x 1m20s (all with short recoveries). For some reason the session seemed really hard.

Sat 5/4 - 12k incl 6k av 4:51 pace. The way it felt I don't think I could keep that pace up for 42k.

Sun 6/4 - 12k incl 10k av just under 5:00s. Felt way more comfy than the day before.

Total for week 50k.

Mon 7/4 - rest

Tue 8/4 - PCRG. Mix of 1min, 30sec, 15sec efforts, plus 1 GC hill. Didn't want to break anything so held back a bit going about 80 to 90%.

Sam & I doing a Matty (Matty reckons the last attempt at this wasn't good enough because we weren't flashing the pearly whites)

So, five more sleeps. I'm still not 100% sure whether to go for a PB in the marathon, which would be such a challenge, or just pace myself to a 50k PB, which is doable.

Current best is 3:26:46 for the marathon. My 3k TT leading up to it was 12:10. Last week I did 11:50. Using those race pace calculators that converts to a 3h21m marathon. To do 3h25m I'd have to run 4:52 pace. Not sure if I can do that.

My second biggest worry is falling in a heap at 35k. Been there, done that, its not much fun.

My biggest worry? Freezing to death at the start line.

Gosh it would have to be very very cold for you to freeze to death in the 50 m walk from your room to the start line.

Can't wait to see which PB you choose to beat. From your training I would have thought you have done more than enough miles to keep you powering on after 35k.

Maybe a clever graph or two may help you make the decision ;-)

You can do it! The marathon PB I'm talking about. For an 11:50 3k runner, 4:50s will feel like a jog on Sunday (after the rest of your taper). And I'm sure you'll keep going at 4:50s for the 8k warm-down :)

I don't think it'll be too cold - recent mornings have been mild - 8-10C or so.

Does Intraining sell punching bags? Spend the $40 on one so you can train up for Saturday.

Trust your training & go for it Tesso!

Good luck; see you on the weekend!

Go for the marathon PB I reckon, 4.52/k easy for someone who runs sub 12 for 3k :-) Good luck

Don't worry, be happy Tesso. Whatever you choose on the morning or even on Saturday afternoon, stick with that and don't waver. Once that gun goes off focus on whichever choice you have made and go for it.

Yeah just do the cruisy 42k like Robert Song...

I'm sure you're primed and pumped; same advice as for GR: don't forget the cotton gloves!

BTW, Nero Wolfe complete series turned up today. Pfui!

Well, when you've already done the unexpected, why not top it off with the impossible and do TWO pbs! :-)

Whichever you choose - one, the other or both - we all know that you'll hit it with everything you've got plus a bit more. I'm just excited that I'm going to be there to see it!!

You won't freeze. Forecast minimum is 9 degrees. Freezing is zero degrees. That's 9 degrees difference, right? Your biggest problem might be rain, and blisters as a result of wet socks. As far as tactics go, you should run steadily with me to the 40k mark in 3:00 then take off (only 10k to go) and you'll set a good 50k time. It would help me too, I need a good pacer if I'm to beat Rob and Ray so as to finish 4th in the M55s.

Wow, that's a dilemma. Imagine how good it will feel to come flying over the line for a PB in the marathon, to surprise everyone and keep going for a second PB!

I agree with the others, make sure you stick to your decision (as hard as it will be because you'll feel great).

Have a restful few days, and see you on Sunday!

Oooh it's exciting, isn't it?

Good luck on Sunday, whichever PB you choose to chase.

Well done!! Now that's a 'Matty'!!!!

Just concentrate on getting to 35k in good shape on Sunday and then 'release the mongrel' as FlashAndy likes to say.

Go for the PB Tesso...you know you want to! In any case, have a great race on Sunday - wishing I was heading down there too, but it's Gold Coast for me this year.

Seriously, go for the marathon pb. Then walk up the hill to recover, and see how you feel for the last 7.8k

i'm not worried. you'll be fine. i think the term for a canberra morning at this time is "brisk." that's also how you'll run. i'll try not to be another worry.

Hey Tesso

For mine I wouldn't decide until after the first 5kms. Just get to that point on target for a marathon PB and then do the same for the next 5 kms. Do this for every 5k until the 40thk and then let sheer willpower get you home for a PB.

I'd do it like this cause once your mind digests the fact that you are going to go at a PB marathon pace for the whole marathon it might send signals to your body to quit this nonsense and shut you down.

Bill Rodgers says something to the effect of "your mind can't know what's coming."

All the best Tess!
