Hamstrung at Warwick

Well, knowing the hammy was gammy I started out gingerly in the half marathon just trying to find the pace that hurt the least. Around the 14k mark the hammy got more and painful and then just 'went'. I was reduced to a slow jog and soon couldn't even do that so walked to the finish line.

But the weekend wasn't over for me. Being one of just five people (and the only female) to have completed all five races at all pentath-runs there was no way I was pulling out and so walked the rest of the events, finishing dead last in a couple of them. I did beat some 3 year olds in the 1500m though :-)

Half Mara - still running at this stage ... & there are actual runners behind me!

5k road race - looks like I have an entourage :-)

10k mountain ascent - okay, joke's over :-(

************

Saw Adam the physio first thing Monday morn and the hammy is torn. He gave me a few simple exercises and basically said do nothing (no walking, no water running etc). Went back again yesterday and there's a big improvement. The massaging didn't hurt nearly anywhere near as much. I was given the ok to hop on the stationary bike and do some swimming (just using the arms).

Adam asked me what events I had coming up and I was doing the GC marathon in less than 6 weeks. He didn't bat an eyelid. Well, I didn't see him bat an eyelid, I was face down on the physio table at the time ...

Jesus, Tesso. What can I say? You are as awesome and inspiring as you are stoopid and pig-headed! I guess that is what makes you a runner, and being fellow-runners is what makes the rest of us able to understand exactly why you did it.

Please take good care and get that hammie right before you go thinking too much about the next races.

Tesso, I was thinking something like this may have happened. So sorry, but it was a huge effort (as Scott is fond of saying) to keep your Warwick streak intact.

Don't do anything silly about GC - a mate of mine was 10 weeks out with a torn hammy. You can always downsize to the 10k (or walk?) and just enjoy the party/cheering.

Hmm, maybe just weld the hammy together.

Or... (runs towards door swiftly)...
don't think about the GCM!!!

Thanks for your kind thoughts the other day. I'm too old to remember what they were.

Oh Tess! I'm so sorry about the hammie! Gobsmacked at how you finished all runs at the pentath.
For all our sakes, get better!

Yes Tesso

flag the GCM and come to Townsville the next month you might be ready by that time.

I just heard that our friend "Pat" will be there as an offical guest.

Anyway sorry to hear about the hammy, still that was a huge effort at Warwick you must be a little dissapointed but you gave it a go and for that you should be proud.

Well done on "going the distance" at Warwick, and keeping the streak intact. Its hard in that situation to carry on. like the "hammy was gammy" quote...photos tell the story well...

all the best getting the hammy right, and don't rush it...they can be a recurring thing if not healed properly, if a number of AFL footballers (and I assume NRL's ers too) are a good guide to hammy problems. Sounds like a good physio you have so that should help. Come back stronger and better, I think muscles usually heal stronger than before, as long as they do heal fully. All the best with it.

Tesso, you remind me of a scene in Monty Python's "Holy Grail".

The one with the knight who has just had all of his limbs cut of is screaming at his attackers "T'is only a flesh wound!"

I have no doubt I'll see you at the Gold Coast. Try to take it easy before then. Please.

Cheers,
Ben

You were obviously understating how bad you hammy was leading into Warwick. Still, at least you have kept the streak going. Love the photos. They tell an amazing story of your toughness. Hope it heals well and you can run something at Gold Coast.

Tesso, terrible news on the hammy. See, Canberra is evil (I'm having fairly substantial achilles niggles).

Gutsy effort to finish all the events. Hope the recovery goes well!

Talking of frozen pea stories. A friend of mine was living in Childers and his local GP who also was a friend offered to do his vasectomy operation for him. Well he knew he was in trouble when after the anaesthetic had been given, the doc had his medical textbook open and was reading what to do out of the book. After it was over, his post-opt instruction for pain and swelling was application of the frozen peas which was required for many days after.

It is still not certain, but hopefully I will be able to get to BRRC on Sunday and can catch up with you then. Hope the hammie is behaving itself
